万博のテーマである「コネクト」から中東の文化的、技術的つながりを幾何学文様や、水技術などを通じて表現したいと考えた。建物を覆うのは両国の伝統的な幾何学文様、日本の「麻の葉文様」と「アラベスク」を組み合わせて表現した立体格子。その昔、シルクロードを介して両文化のつながりがったのではないかと言われている。格子に小さな膜が集積し、日差しから建物を守る。風によって膜が揺れ、風を可視化している。そして細やかな微振動によって繊細な影を生む。膜が集積した姿は折り紙を思わせる。折り紙はもともと折形礼法という日本特有の礼を尽くす伝統が発祥であり、人をお迎えするファサードとなる。
上空から俯瞰すると建物全体が二等辺三角形、その前には二等辺三角形の水盤がある。通路の角地に立つという条件から、どの道からも正面として受け止める角度の面となっている。二等辺三角形は白銀比である。砂漠に建つピラミッドなどの黄金比に対し、日本古来の比率を使うことで上空から見た時のメッセージとした。水盤を通る風が気化熱で冷やされて冷たい自然の風を建物に取り込む。日本、中東で古来から使われている水と風のシステムを使った。近年では中東に海水淡水化システムなど日本の水技術との繋がりがある。水盤はそのつながりを表現している。
From the Expo's theme of "Connect," we wanted to express the cultural and technological connections between the Middle East through geometric patterns and water technology. The building is covered with a three-dimensional latticework that combines the traditional geometric patterns of the two countries, the Japanese "hemp leaf pattern" and "arabesque. It is said that the two cultures may have been linked via the Silk Road in the past. The lattice is made up of a series of small membranes that protect the building from the sun. The membranes sway with the wind, making the wind visible. The fine micro-vibrations create delicate shadows. The accumulation of membranes is reminiscent of origami. Origami originated in the Japanese tradition of origata etiquette, which is a way of showing respect and courtesy, and is used as a façade to welcome people.
When viewed from above, the entire building is an isosceles triangle, with an isosceles triangle water basin in front of it. The building stands on the corner of a passageway, so it is an angled surface that can be accepted as the front from any street. The isosceles triangle has a silver-white ratio. In contrast to the golden ratio of pyramids built in the desert, the use of this ancient Japanese ratio was used to convey a message when seen from above. The wind passing through the water table is cooled by vaporization heat, bringing cool natural breezes into the building. We used the water and wind system that has been used since ancient times in Japan and the Middle East. In recent years, there have been connections to Japanese water technology, such as seawater desalination systems in the Middle East. The water table expresses this connection.
