京都の老舗喫茶店である前田珈琲は、京都芸術センター内にもその店舗の一つ「前田珈琲 明倫店」がある。
その開店20周年を記念した店内のキッチンを現代アートの彫刻作品tower(KITCHEN)に作り変えるプロジェクト。移設前のキッチンの痕跡がわかるように、その一部を解体後の状態のまま残し、作品となる新設のキッチンは既存に対して異質な雰囲気が出るようテラゾーで仕上げた。tower(KITCHEN)を喫茶店の中央に置くことで、作品としての存在感を出しつつ、どの席に座ってもそれぞれの視点から違った角度で作品を鑑賞できるようになっている。
もともと小学校だったこの建物は、地域の人にとって特別に愛着のある場所であるとともに、芸術センターというアートの発信の場で世界中から多くのアーティストが訪れる場でもある。 長年地元の人に愛されてきた雰囲気も残しつつ、もともとこの場を知っている人にも、初めてこの場所を訪れた人にも、体感的にも視覚的にも楽しんでもらえるような場づくりを目指した。この場所をアーティストと地元の方々、地元の子どもたちの接点をつくれる場所にしていきたいという色々な人の想いがあり、喫茶店としての機能だけではなく、アーティストの発表の場や、さまざまなワークショップ、プログラムの運営などを計画している。

Maeda Coffee is a long-established coffee shop in Kyoto.
One of its branches, “MEIRIN-TEN”, is located in the Kyoto Art Center. In celebration of its 20th anniversary, this project transformed the kitchen inside the shop into a contemporary art sculpture: tower(KITCHEN).
To show traces of the original kitchen, part of it was left in its dismantled state and the new kitchen, the artwork, was finished with terrazzo to create a different atmosphere from the already existing one.
By placing the tower(KITCHEN) in the centre of the coffee shop, we enhanced its sense of presence as artwork, while also making it possible to appreciate it from different perspectives, no matter where you are seated.
The building, which was originally a primary school, is not only a place loved by the locals but also a place where many artists from all over the world visit to present their art.
Our aim was to retain the atmosphere that has long been cherished by the locals, while at the same time creating a space that can be enjoyed both physically and visually by those who are familiar with the place and those who visit it for the first time.
Behind this project, there are the thoughts of various people wanting to make this venue a place where artists, local people and children could connect with each other.
Not only is this a coffee shop, but it is planned to provide a place for artists to present their work and to hold different workshops and programmes.
