Completed in 1983, this is a two-family residence for households of two generations living together. Back then, the neighbourhood was a quiet residential area with large private homes surrounded by trees. But then again, if one took a good look, you could expect that these residences will be soon replaced by large apartment buildings, turning the area into one full of urban housing complexes.
In the course of rebuilding, the parental generation, who had lived on the grounds for many years, wished for a wooden one-storied home connected to a garden, a horizontally expansive space same as prior. On the contrary, being art-oriented by profession, both husband and wife of the 2nd generation household living on the upper floor, desired a three-dimensional and dynamic space.
The challenge was to find a spatial configuration that would enable the realisation of the above mentioned different aims while still meeting the requirements of the bearing wall structure, which requires a common arrangement of the upper and lower floor. The chosen method was to create two walls acting as a façade, behind which separate spaces unfold. This way, an internal space protected from an increasingly dense surrounding was secured while creating a layered structure which merges the two different ideas.
Both walls, one forming a façade towards the city and the other facing towards the internal structure, do not provide openings that reflect the functionality of the interior space, but rather regular openings in the guise of some kind of expressionlessness.
Time passed, and in 2008, due to a change in the family structure, the ground floor was renovated so that both generations now lived together and the elderly could be taken care of. At the same time, the upper floor was converted into a gallery run by the younger couple (the recordings published are the ones of this renovated space).
Over the past 25 years, as predicted, the surrounding environment has changed from large private residences to apartment complexes.
The renovation of the house into a two-generation residence and gallery tears off the living arrangements to reveal the original space between the walls, and was carried out as a “Restauro”, which adds new functions while valuing the original construction.
